Wonder when this was sung and who is the person giving daad. Perhaps meer can shed some light on that. He is going a bit overboard in the his praise at the beginning, though it is mostly nice to see a listener so excited.

In any case the style of singing is so full of fun especially considering the words.

I wish that I could see the ujala on the horizon.

Focus on the Beginnings (Behlava) - Mun Kunto Moala

One of the beautiful things about qawwali is that one rendition is never the same as another, so even though you have heard the Qaul a hundred times, each new rendition is unique and has it's own beauty.

This one is particularly special because of it beautifully classical and unhurried Behlava. The sazeena has been removed so one can focus on the Behlava. The singing begins with a Raag Bhopali bandish "Aik suratiya ki do hein Mooratiya" and is soulful as it progresses into the main body of the poetry becoming increasingly intense.

Farid Ayaz and his party have outdone themselves here. The sargam and the laeykari has got to be one of the best ever. The whole party works well in unison and helps create this atmosphere of being one with the instruments as well as true to the word.

Abu Hurairah reported that whenever the Prophet, peace be upon him, was faced with a serious difficulty, he would raise his head to the sky and supplicate, "Subhan-Allah al-'Azim (glory be to Allah, the Mighty)." And when he implored seriously and strongly, he would say "Ya Hayyu, Ya Qayyum (O Ever-Living One, O Self-Existing One upon Whom we all depend)." (hadith of Tirmidhi)

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born on October 13, 1948 in the city of Faisalabad Pakistan. He was the fifth child and first son of Fateh Ali Khan, a musicologist, vocalist, instrumentalist, and Qawwal.Nusrat fateh ali khan began by learning to play tabla alongside his father before progressing to learn Raag Vidya and Bol Bandish. He then went on to learn to sing within the classical framework of khayal.Nusrat fateh ali Khan was taken ill with kidney and liver failure on August 11, 1997 in London, England while on the way to Los Angeles in order to receive a kidney transplant. He died of a sudden cardiac arrest at Cromwell Hospital, London, on Saturday, August 16, 1997, aged 48.Nusrat fateh ali Khan's training with his father was cut short when his father died in 1964, leaving Khan's paternal uncles, Mubarak Ali Khan and Salamat Ali Khan, to complete his training.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is widely considered to be the most important qawwal in history. In 1987, Khan received the President of Pakistan Award for Pride of Performance for his contribution to Pakistani music. In 1995 he received the UNESCO Music Prize. In 1996 he was awarded Grand Prix des AmÃ©riques at Montreal World Film Festival for exceptional contribution to the art of cinema. In 2005, Nusrat was awarded the Legends award at the UK Asian Music Awards. Time magazine issue of November 6, 2006,60 Years of Asian Heroes, lists him as one of the top 12 Artists and Thinkers in the last 60 years. He also appeared on NPR 50 Great Voices list in 2010.

There was a beautiful mood created that night which can be felt through this particular ghazal. Both the qawwals and the audience were in heaven and feeding off each other. The style (andaaz-e-bayan) takes me back to other recitals I heard during my childhood.

Aaja Moray Nainan Mein Saajna

A Star is born! Upcoming young Pakistani singer Hamza Akram sings this traditional qawwali kalam with modern instruments. The tarz is beautiful as is the style of his singing. The sound of the bansuri and tabla add a lovely element of softness that is at times absent from qawwali. Hamza is the descendant of several generations of singer and hails from the Dehli Gharana. His father is Ghulam Akram Qawwal who is a senior member of the Farid Ayaz Qawwal party, where Hamza has also started to perform lately in the front row.

Hamza's ustaad is the famous classical singer Naseeruddin Saami, therefore the obviously well trained voice and wonderful control. I am sure he is going places....

This beautiful salaam by Hazrat Amir Khusrau appears to have gone out of vogue in qawwali since the '60s. It was once a standard part of the repertoire of Qawwal Bachche performers, usually sung after the Qaul "Mun Kunto Maula". This modern rendition by Ustaad Bahauddin Qawwal is therefore all the more appreciated!

O ethereal bird! It is better to starve to death,
Than to live on a prey that clogs thy wings in flight.

Better than Darius and Alexander is the fakir,

Listening to this recital I am immediately taken back to the days of my youth

when I'd go to listen to Aziz Mian in various little hotels on Murree Road with my friend Dr. Mubashar. We had one common interest which was qawwali and would be lost together a world of our own where Aziz Mian, may his soul rest in peace, would transport us. Mubashar and I would both applaud loudly as Aziz would recite in his typical and unique andaaz of gayeki. He sang with a special gusto and passion, often standing up on his knees, when he was particularly taken with the poetry. Long hair waiving about; his head moving with the rhythm from side to side in ecstasy :-) .

The group was simple and small. The younger ones always admiring the master. The places they sang were basic and I think we paid very little for the pleasure of being there. Those were some wonderful times when great memories were made.

Today I went out looking for an audio CD by the Afghan classical Ustad Mohammad Hussain Sarahang. There are three Afghan grocery stores around our neighborhood here in Quebec and to my delight I found a CD entitled "Tarke Arezoo" in one of these stores.

The first track in this wonderful collection is a 6 minute tarana by Amir Khusraw which I will post later. When I searched on youtube I discovered that the rare qawwali "Tark e Arezoo Kerdam" was of course there all along. Hope you enjoy Sarahang's endearing style as much as I did.

Ustad Sharafat Ali Khan (1955 - 2009) belonged to the Sham Churasi Gharana and won several prestigious awards.

He was the eldest son of famous classical singer Ustad Salamat Ali Khan. Born in Multan, Sharafat began his musical career in his childhood and graduated from the prestigious Government College in Lahore.

Khan inherited his father’s singing qualities and had enormous grip over thumri, kafi, khayal and ghazal. He got his first award – Tamgha-e-Hunar - from Afghanistan. Subsequently Khan was honoured with the Saraswati and other awards for his exceptional performances.

For those from Montreal who know Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan, Sharafat was his elder brother.

Asif Ali Khan Santoo sings Ali Da Malang

On of the disciples of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Asif Ali Khan Santoo has lots of promise at this young age. He sings with passions but sticks to the melody while not going crazy screaming. This recital at Al Hamra Arts Coucil is beautiful with its ups and downs like a flowing river. Around 0.53 to 1.14..and 6.00 ..it is done very intelligently. Knows how to engage the audience and take them with him on the journey of qawwali. I loved how he brings the tempo down around 3.17 and then picks it up ever so slowly with "Ali mera dil, Ali meri jaan".

'Ismail Azad Qawwal, a very celebrated qawwal of the era 1940-50s, was from India and sung many renowned qawwaliz a huge proportion of which were the masterpieces written by Anwar Masroor. He was famous for singing qawwaliz with lyrics having sheer meanings and lessons in them. His qawwaliz were copied in India as well as in Pakistan subsequently. Many qawwals seemed to have inspired by his beguiling compositions and the way he delivered the verses.

'The dominant feature of his masterpieces was the simplicity and the meaningfulness of the kalam and the catchy compositions that magnetized the attention of the listeners and generated a considerable Ismaili fanclub. Unlike a traditional qawwal, he never focused on the 'raag' yet he possessed a melodious, sharp and easily distinguishable voice. Since he made his mark far before the 3 gigantic legends namely Aziz Mian, Sabri Borthers and Nusrat, they viewed him as one of the trendsetters in the qawwali world. Naat, Manqabat and Shan-e-Auliya (Grandeur of Saints) were the major topics of his qawwaliz though he sung for the films as well including numbers like "Hamain To Loot Liya", etc. His famous numbers were "Paaray Paaray Pe Likha Hai Kamli Walay Ka Naam", "Mere Peer Hain Jilani", "Takhti", "Haider Ki Talwar", "Bade Peer Benazir", "Hamain To Loot Liya" and many more.'

There is a special softness to this old renditions of "Allah Hu". The

pure humility, the beseeching to be heard and the surrender. with

the use of phrases such as "Khalik e qul hai Tu" & "Saare aalam

ko hai teri hi jus-tuju" coupled with the gentle, warm and affectionate

style makes this one of my favs. Andaaz purana, narm aur khoobsoorat.

The young man with the melodious voice (to the right) is by now
middle aged. Better known as Ghous Muhammad Nasir Niazi Qawwal,
he is the son of the late Ustad Moin Niazi (Tamgha-e-Imtiaz) who is in
the lead here.

IN THE COURTYARD OF THE BELOVED is a visual and aural portrait of Nizamuddin Auliya Dargah, a Sufi shrine in New Delhi, India. Made from over 18,000 still images and ambient sounds recorded on-site, rapid-fire bursts of kaleidoscopic imagery assemble into fractured collages.

Each day, hundreds of pilgrims travel by airplane, train, car, rickshaw and foot to reach this shrine, which honors a 12th century Sufi mystic who believed in drawing close to God through renunciation of the world and service to humanity. Beginning with imagery from these journeys, the film then enters the physical space of the shrine; a unique nexus of marketplace, social space and spiritual haven, where devotees come to offer their prayers and find a moment of reflection away from the din of Delhi traffic. As the sun sets behind the dome, musicians begin the qawwali, a style of Sufi devotional music that ranges from contemplative religious elegy to raucous crescendo.

Whenever I listen to Jafar Husain Khansaheb I am reminded of an old discussion about ras.

Not just the ras that is similar to nectar or sheera, words often used to describe the sweetness of singing, but also the ras which is the mood of the raag being sung. Whatever Khan saheb may be lacking in loudness he more than compensates with the ras in the recital of melody. "Mast Qalandar" is one such example of a sufiana kalam that is meant to be sung with much gusto and a powerful passion. So much so that often it gets the listener to beysaakhta stand up and start to dance. Khansaheb may not inspire you to dance, yet the style of this special recital will touch the heart through the feelings conveyed.

O laal meri pat rakhio bala jhoole laalan,

Sindri da Sehvan da, sakhi Shabaaz kalandar,

Dama dam mast kalandar, Ali dam dam de andar

World music day: Music is spiritual and eternal, says Pakistani classical vocalist

On the occasion of world music day, Pakistan's legendary classical vocalist Ustad Naseeruddin Saami says that music can help spread peace and love between the two countries.

"Music has great power. It can heal even deepest of wounds," the legendary 'Khayal' vocalist said, stressing that it could help bring the people of India and Pakistan together.

"Hum sur kay saath baat kartey hein (we talk through our music)," Saami, who was in India for about a month giving performances, told PTI.

He was in the country on the invitation of Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture (SPICMACAY).

The 66-year-old 'Khayal' singer of the "Dilli Gharana" says that classical singing should be promoted among the younger generation.

"I feel classical singing has great powers. It can not only help bring the people of the two nations together, but it can also help wean away our younger generation from the ills afflicting the modern society," he said.

He said that the present generation was madly after Western music because "we do not teach them our own music forms. We need to cultivate a taste for these forms among the youth".

"It is not that the younger generation does not want to learn these forms. When I was in Cuttack for a performance, I was pleasantly surprised to see a group of about 1500 people, mostly youngsters, who were keen to know more about Khayal and other forms of classical singing," he said.

Speaking about his childhood days, Saami said he obtained training from his late uncle, the eminent Munshi Raziuddin.

He also obtained further training under the elders of the Dilli Gharana, Sardar Khan, Pyaray Khan and Iftikhar Ahmed Khan.

Saami attaches great importance to the historic traditions of his art. His style of singing is called 'Shudh Bani'.

"I am a strict practitioner of my inherited musical philosophy? that of maintaining and believing in the purity of 'Sur' (melody of notes) because Ragas demand Sur," said Saami, who performs other elements of classical music like Thumri, Sadra and Kajri with versatility, which is distinctive of his Gharana.

Saami said that his ancestors founded the school of music known as the "Dilli Gharana" while his ancestor Miyan Samaat had the privilege of being the disciple of Hazrat Amir Khusrao.

"I was born in Delhi and lost my parents early. My uncle groomed me. We are closely related to another great musician Qutub Baksh, also known as Ustad Tan Ras Khan, the legendary composer and vocalist of the Dilli school, who perfectly blended various aspects of the Khayal," he said.

Rajastani folk song "Kesariya Balam" is sung here by classical singer Ustad Naseeruddin Saami.

Originally from the Delhi Gharana, Saami is from Karachi, Pakistani.

His mentors were his Ustad and uncle Munshi Raziuddin. Ustad Sardar Khan, Iftikhar Ahmed and Piaray Khan whom he avidly follows. Saami saheb also happens to be married to the daughter of Raziuddin and his son Rauf Saami thankfully follows in his footsteps and has recently opened a school of music based in Defence, Karachi.

A wonderful recital of Khusrau's kalam by father-son team in this particular case. Both are handsome and quite animated. The son has an uncanny resemblance to the actor Amir Khan.

The Wadali Brothers - normally Puranchand Wadali & Pyarelal Wadali are fifth generation Sufi singers from Amritsar. Earlier in life they both dabbled in other professions. One was a wrestler in an akhara and the other a nautanki actor :-). Who could have thought they could become qawwali stars of India.

Wiki: They believe in the Sufi tradition deeply. They consider themselves as a medium through which the preaching of great saints is passed on to others. They have never indulged commercially, and they have only a handful of recordings to their name (mostly from live concerts). They believe in singing freely as homage to the divine one. They do not feel very comfortable in using electronic gadgets in their music, and stress on Alap and Taans. They believe that spiritual heights can only be attained if you sing unreservedly, in a free atmosphere.

Recently, they stepped into the world of Bollywood music, rendering music director and writer Gulzar’s soulful lyrics in their unique style in the film Pinjar. They also sang one song in Dhoop. On the cards is a documentary which the Discovery Channel is planning to make on them.
