O vada-shikan ab bhi teri sham nahi hai

Recital: Jafar Husain Khan Badauni

O vada-shikan, ab bhi teri sham nahi hai

Aisi pila ke jiss ka nasha umr bhar rahay
Aur merey hi muqadar mein koi jaam nahin hai
Saaqi ne diya jaam, aur kaha, hosh mein rehna
Kam-zarf ke peenay ka yahan kaam nahin hai
Waqt aaney ka unke dil-e-nakam, nahin hai
Vo sham ko aayen ge, abhi sham nahin hai
Kamzor nigahon ka yahan kam nahin hai
O vada-shikan, ab bhi teri sham nahi hai

Mujh Mein Har Rung Ab Tumhara Hai -

Jafar Husain Khansaheb ki sureeli awaz aur khubsoorat pyar bharay andaaz mein ye kalam aik farq hi rung mein, aur ruhani nisbat se pardha gaya hai.

preamble:
Manzil Milli, Murad Milli, Mudaa Milla
Sab Kuchh Mujhay Milla, Jo Tera Naqsh-e-Pa Milla

Jab Dur tak Na Koi, Faqir Aashna Milla
Tera Niyaz-mand, Teray Dar se Ja Milla

------
Mujh Mein Har Rung Ab Tumhara Hai,
Ab to Keh do, Ke Tu Hamara Hai,

Aalam-e-Shoaq Mein, Na Jaaney Kyon,
Mein Ne Har Dam, Tumhein Pukara Hai

Tuu To Sab Hi Ke Paas Hai Moajood,
Kon Kehta Hai, Tuu Hamara Hai

Terey Sadqay Mein Ye Tamaam Jahan
Apni Thhokar Pe Main Ne Mara Hai

Raaz Ko Raaz Kyon Samajhtey Ho
Raaz Duniya Pe Aashiqara Hai,

Ab to Keh do, Ke Tu Hamara Hai,

-----------------------------------------

I arrived at my destiny,
Received my heart's desire,

My prayers were answered.
I received all, when I saw the imprint of Thy feet

When in the distance no one fimiliar with poverty was found
Your supplicant embraced Your door.

Now that all I have are Your colors
Pray tell me, You are mine.

In this mysterious world of desire,
I have called Your name with each breath.

After all You are present for everyone
Who can lay claim, You are just mine.

My Lord, this entire world is by your Grace
I sacrifice everything worldly for you

Why consider this mystery such a secret
When his eternal love is revealed to the entire world.

Baro Ghi Ke Diye - In Celebration of the Birth of the Prophet PBUH

For Urdu lovers and especially those exposed to some Purbi the recital of the badhawa "Baro Ghi Ke Diye" is filled with a such sweet mithhaas. It is of not just the quaint vocabulary here but also the motherly love and pride conveyed in them. The rendition below by the late Qawwal Bahauddin Khansaheb of Karachi is so beautifully packed with passion and jazba. Enjoy the mehfil-e-sama.

The earth and sky kiss your doorstep; You are the Glow!
Covet of the angels, the Light of Allah; You are the Perfect Man!

The two worlds are illuminated by your [blessed] face
The sun and moon reflect your [blessed] countenance

O Light of Allah Almighty! You are the Luster!
Your eyebrows [reflect the beauty of] the verses of the Quran

Your hair [reflects the vigor of] the exegesis of the Quran
Your [blessed] soul is our Quran; You are [the foundation] of belief!

O Chosen One! O Elected One! Have mercy on us!
Our hands find nothing to cling to; You are the [covering] safe haven!

I am a sinner, I am weak, I am helpless -- this is my condition
O Intercessor of the Day of Recompense! You are the savior!

Jami (ra) with his own eyes saw the likeness of the unveiling of God's [vast] ocean
My body and soul are sacrificed for you; You are the essence!

Ae ri Sakhi ri Morey Khwaja Ghar Aaye - Jafar Husain Khan Badauni

Another exceptional recital by Jafar Husain Khan Badauni, from his later years, which is full of jazba (feeling) and melody.

Surely one of the top qawwals ever, Jafar Husain khansaheb was sadly neither recognized as an exceptional artist in his homeland, nor achieved any serious international fame during his lifetime.

Like many before him, qawwali lovers, worldwide now love him like never before.

The following is a second rendition with a better audio quality and a somewhat different mood.

Nami Danam Chi Manzil - Amir Khusrau Poetry

1. This rendition by Jafar Hussain Khan Badauni is pure melody. Awaaz mein ras tapakta hai.

2. This second rendition by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is probably the most complete rendition (30 minutes) of "Nami Daman Chi Manzil, Bood Shab Jaye Ke Man Boodam" - Amir Khusrau Poetry.

I love the really slow start (alaap) and the steady build up to intense climax. It is truly an unhurried recital where the singers have enjoyed every moment and cherished the words and the music.

Nami daanam chi manzil
bood shab jaye ki man boodam;

Baharsu raqs-e bismil
bood shab jaye ki man boodam.

Pari paikar nigaar-e-sarw-a-qadde lala rukhsare;
Sarapa aafat-e dil
bood shab jaye ki man boodam.

Khuda khud meer-e majlis
bood andar laamakan Khusrau;

Muhammad sham-e-mehfil
bood shab jaye ki man boodam.

I wonder what was the place
where I was last night,

All around me were half-slaughtered victims of love,
tossing about in agony.

There was a nymph-like beloved with cypress-like form
and tulip-like face,
Ruthlessly playing havoc with the hearts of the lovers.

God himself was the master of ceremonies in that heavenly court,
oh Khusrau, where (the face of) the Prophet too was shedding light like a candle.

One of the best renditions that I have heard to date.

What a wonderful recital with so many new verses, not part of the original kalam, that are beautiful and that you may not have heard earlier.

Nami Daanam Chi Manzil
Bood Shab Jaye Ke Man Boodam

Teri Justuju Mein Khabar Nahin
Mein Kahan Kahan se Guzar Gaya

Yeh Apna Apna Hai Hosla
Yeh to Apni Apni Urdaan hai
Koin Urd keh Reh Gaya Bam Tak
Koin Kehkashan se Guzar Gaya

Nami Daanam Chi Manzil
Nami Daanam Chi Manzil

Woh Maqaam Dair-o-haram Baney
Waheen Sab ki Gardan Kham Hui
Waheen sar ka Sajda Hui Jabeen
Tu Jahan Jahan se Guzar Gaya

The road to the Well is much too difficult,
How do I get my pot filled?

When I went to fill the water,
In the furor, I broke my pot.

Khusrau has given his whole life to you Oh, Nijam.
Would you please take care of my veil (or self respect),

The road to the well is much too difficult.
