Ni Main Hunay Suneya - Kāfis Bulleh Shah

Trans: Faqir Mohd., Kulliyat

O friends, it is now that I learn, how love and law are related

By drinking a cup of love, all things are forgotten
In every house abides the Lord, I find Him pervaiding one and all
Within us abides our Murshid
When I fell in love I learnt this
My logic, my grammar, my polemics
all my knowledge proved futile

With prayers, with fasts. what has he to do
The one intoxicated with the wine of love
The eruditions of Pandits,
The scholarships of Mullahs proved futile
None of them get at the secret

Little does he know the worth of the silks
The one who spins only coarse cloth
Sitting in the presence of the Beloved
Bullah has become mute and dumb

O friends, it is now that I learn, how love and law are related

Ni main hone suneya isheqَ shera ki natha ۔

muhabat da ik piyaala pii, bhul jawen sebh baatan,
ghar ghar sayean hey woh sayean, her her nal pechhata

andar sadey murshed vesda, nahen lega tan jata,
mentek m'eney kenz qedwera, perhaa 'elem gewata

Bulla Shah d majles bei key, ho gaya gunga bata

na man hen suneya ishqَ shera ki nath

Chup kar ke kareen guzaare nun - Bulleh Shah

Wadali Brothers

Stay silent to survive.
People cannot stand to hear the truth. They are at your throat if you speak it. They keep away from those who speak it. But truth is sweet to its lovers!
Sach shara kare barbaadi eh, sach aashiq de ghar shaadi eh.

Sach karda naveen abaadi eh, jiha shara tareekat hare nu.
Chup kareke kareen guzaare nu.

Truth destroys shara.
Brings rapture to its lovers,
And unexpected riches,
Which shara obscures.
Stay silent to survive.
Chup aashiq to na hundi eh, jis aayi sach sugandhi eh.

Jis maahl suhaag di gundi eh, chadd duniya kood pasaare nu.
Chup kareke kareen guzaare nu.

Those lovers cannot remain silent
Who have inhaled the fragrance of truth.
Those who have plaited love into their lives,
Leave this world of falsehood.
Stay silent to survive.
Bulla Shah sach hun bole hai, sach shara tareekat phole eh.

Gal chauthe pad di khole eh, jiha shara tareeke haare nu.
Chup kareke kareen guzaare nu.

Bulla Shah speaks the truth.
He uncovers the truth of shara.
He opens the path to the fourth level,
Which shara obscures.
Stay silent to survive.

Ab Ham Aise Gum Hue - Bulleh Shah

Posted again with this rendition by Radhika Chopra

Recital by Radhika Chopra
Kalam: Baba Bulleh Shah
Jahan e Khusrau Festival 2010

Ab ham aise gum hue, Prem nagar ke shehr
Apne aap nun sudh rahe hein, Na sir, hath, na pair
Khudi khoii apna ped chita, Tab hoi gal khaer
Laththe dhagde pahile ghar thi, Kaun kare nirvaer.
Bullah shah hai dohi jehane, koi na na dasda ghair

~Bulleh Shah

Recital by Wadali Brothers

trans:
Now I am lost in the abode of the Beloved
Searching for the Self, oblivious of my surroundings
Having shed my ego, I found self awareness
Bulleh Shah! the Beloved is present in both worlds.
None have said otherwise.

Here the Wadalis have added the Iqbal verse on "Khudi"

Khudi ko kar buland itna, ke har taqder se pehle.Khuda bande se ye poche, bata teri raza kia hai

Ve mahiya tere vekhan nu - Wadali brothers

Bollywood meets dancing dervesh girls

Ve mahiya tere vekhan nu,
chuk charkha gali de vich panwa,

Oh Beloved, to get your glimpse,
I have placed the charkha in the lane outside,

Ve loka paane main kat di,
tang teriya yaad de panwa.

People may think I am spinning the threads of cotton,
But I am truly spinning the thread of your memories.

Charkhe di oo kar de ole,
yaad teri da tumba bole.

I put the charka aside in the shade
The music of your memories rings in my heart.

ve nimma nimma geet ched ke,
tang kath di hullare panwa

Humming along the song slowly,
I am spinning gently, the joy when we meet.

vasan ni de rahe saure peke,
mainu tere pain pulekhe,

our relatives don't let me rest at ease,
But I keep getting the feeling that you've come.

ve hoon mainu das mahiya,
tere baaju kidhar main jayiyaan.

Oh darling, I ask you this,
If I don't go to you then were do I go !

ho eid aayi, mera yaar na aaya,
tera ve khair hove ove tamd,

The day of celebrations(eid) has come,
but my beloved hasn't come,

haar shingar change nai lagde,
ho kisi cheez pe nazar na jamdi,

The jewellery and the colors don't seem pretty,
Nothing around interests me,

sukha waalian needra mangne,
yaar mile to main eid manva,
bina yaar de eid na gamdi.

I only pray for a night of peaceful sleep,
Let my love come and I would celebrate Eid,
For without my love eid does not feel like eid.

Tu Mane ya na Mane Dildara Wadali Brothers

What a wonderfully spirited performance by the Wadali brothers. One of them was a wrestler and the other a nautanki performer before they adopted the world of music. Their repertoire consists primarily of Sufiyana poetry.

Tujh bin jeena bhi kya jeena
Teri chaukhat mera madeena

Kahin aur na sajda gawara
Asaan ne tennu Rab manya

Tu mane ya na mane dildara
 Assan te tainu Rab manneya

Das hor keda rab da dwara
Assan te tainu Rab manaya

 Apne tan ki khaak urdai
Tab ye ishq ki manzil paayi

Meri saanson ka bolae ik tara
Assan te tainu Rab manaya

Aaj Kitab e Ishq da, Koi Agala Varka Khol. - Wadali Brothers

A heartwrenching poem by Amrita Pritam written on her journey from Pakistan to India, when she observed Punjab burning, during the time of partition in 1947.

Aaj aakhan Waris Shah nu, kiton kabran vichon bol,

Ajj lakhan dheean rondi aan, tainun Warish Shah nu kahen.

Uth dardmandan dia dardia, Uth takk apana Punjab
Ajj bailey lashan vichhian, te lahu di bhari Chinab

Kise ne panjan paanian vich ditti zahar rala

Is zarkhez zameen de looN looN phuttia zehar
gitth gitth charhian laalian foot foot charhia kehar.

Veh vallissi vaa pher, bann bann vaggi ja,
ohne har ik baans di vanjhali, ditti naag bana.

Pehley dang madarian, mantar gaye guach,
Dooje dang di lagg gayi, janey khaney nun laag.

laagaan keele lok munh, bus fir dang hi dang,
Palo pali Punjab de, neele pai gaye ang.

Galeon tutte geet fir, trakaleon tutti tand,
Trinjanon tuttian sahelian, charakhare ghookar band.

Ranjhe de sab veer aj, bhul gaye ohdi jach!

Dharti te lahoo vassiya, kabran paian choan,
Preet dian shahzadian, aj vich mazaran roan.

Aj sabb kaidon ban gaye, husan-ishq de chor,
Aj kitthon le ayiye labbh ke Waris Shah ikk hor.

Aj aakhan Waris Shah nu, kiton kabran vichon bole,

The magic of Wadali brothers singing sufiana kalam:

Mann Atkea Beyparwah de Naal (Kaafi) Shah Hussain

The son of a Rajput weaver, Hazrat Shah Hussain (1538 – 1599) is considered the pioneer of Kaafi.

Mann Atkeya Beyparwah de Naal
Us deen duni de shah de nal

My soul is entangled with the indifferent one

Lord of all things visible and invisible

Kahe Husain Faqeer Numanrha

Sache Sahib Nu Mein Jana

Aurhak Kam Allah De Nal

Says Hussain, the worthless faqir,

I know the true Lord

In the end I will meet my Creator

Man atkeya beparwah de nal
Us deen duni de shah de nal

Alif Allah Chambe di Booti - Wadali Brothers

Sufi singers Puranchand Wadali & Pyarelal Wadali, from Eastern Punjab,
sing "Alif Allah Chambe di Booti" The last verse "Jaevein Dudh Dahee..".
is endearing and new to me. Reminding us all about what is similar in
us and our beliefs, rather than our differences.

Eng trans:

My Master Has Planted in My Heart the Jasmine of Allah’s Name.
Both My Denial That the Creation is Real and My Embracing of God,
the Only Reality,
Have Nourished the Seedling Down to its Core.
When the Buds of Mystery Unfolded Into the Blossoms of Revelation,
My Entire Being Was Filled with God’s Fragrance.
May the Perfect Master Who Planted this Jasmine
in My Heart Be Ever Blessed, O Bahu!

Main to Piya se Naina Laga Aayi Re

A wonderful recital of Khusrau's kalam by father-son team in this particular case. Both are handsome and quite animated. The son has an uncanny resemblance to the actor Amir Khan.

The Wadali Brothers - normally Puranchand Wadali & Pyarelal Wadali are fifth generation Sufi singers from Amritsar. Earlier in life they both dabbled in other professions. One was a wrestler in an akhara and the other a nautanki actor :-). Who could have thought they could become qawwali stars of India.

Wiki: They believe in the Sufi tradition deeply. They consider themselves as a medium through which the preaching of great saints is passed on to others. They have never indulged commercially, and they have only a handful of recordings to their name (mostly from live concerts). They believe in singing freely as homage to the divine one. They do not feel very comfortable in using electronic gadgets in their music, and stress on Alap and Taans. They believe that spiritual heights can only be attained if you sing unreservedly, in a free atmosphere.

Recently, they stepped into the world of Bollywood music, rendering music director and writer Gulzar’s soulful lyrics in their unique style in the film Pinjar. They also sang one song in Dhoop. On the cards is a documentary which the Discovery Channel is planning to make on them.
