Kithe Meher Ali Kithe Teri Sana - كتھے مہر علی كتھے تیری ثنا،

This Naatiya kalam by Peer Mehr Ali Shah is one from a recital
by Abida Parveen. The wonderful backdrop is the Mohatta Palace in Karachi.

Kithay meher ali, kithay teri sana
Gustakh akhian kithay ja laRian

Where is (the humble) Mehr Ali to chant your praise
How impudent his eyes are to aspire to the heights of you Love!

Aj sik mitran di wadheri ae
Kyon dilri udas ghaneri ae
Loon loon vich shakh changeri ae
Aj nainan layian kyon jharian

Why is it that the yearning for the Loved One (i.e., the Holy Prophet) is especially strong today?
Why is my heart sadder today than even before?
Why does longing penetrate every tissue of mine?
And why are the eyes shedding tears like a shower of rain?

Kithay meher ali, kithay teri sana
Gustakh akhian kithay ja laRian

Where is (the humble) Mehr Ali to chant your praise
How impudent his eyes are to aspire to the heights of you Love!

Mukh chand badar shah shani ae
Mathe chamke laaj noorani ae
Kali zulf te akh mastani ae
Chite dand moti jaan hil larian

His face shines like the full moon;
A brilliant light radiates from his brow;
His hair is black,
and his eyes are bewitching and intoxicated.

Kithay meher ali, kithay teri sana
Gustakh akhian kithay ja laRian

Aisi soorat noon main jaan akhan
Jaan akhan k jaan-e-jahan akhan
Sach akhan te rub di shaan akhan
Jis shaan toon shanan sub banian

I am not sure whether I should call his face the essence of life;
Or life of the entire universe;
The truth is that it is (like) the glory of God,
From which all other (worldly) glories originated,

Kithay meher ali, kithay teri sana
Gustakh akhian kithay ja laRian

Qawwals Take the Message of Sufis to a Hindu Temple - "Teri Yaad Hai Mun Ka Chain Piya"

Qawwals from Pakistan bring the sufi message of love to a Hindu Temple in Canada.

Here's a beautiful qawwali, "Teri yaad hai man ka chain piya":

Teri Yaad Hai Mun ka Chain from Tasawwuf on Vimeo.

A Message from BohotKhoob on this Qawwali Mehfil in a Hindu Temple:
Dear AK, wanted to share these comments from my uncle Asif:

-----
This has to be one of their most beautiful mehfils that I have heard. Not just because of the the music. Not just because of the brilliant rendition of Chaap Tilak and their use of Kabir's Dohas to create a context. Not just because of the uniqueness of Teri Yad hai Mun ka Chain (notice the taal. It is not the typical dhamaal). It is because they have re-enlivened the essence of that great edifice, Indo-Islamic civilization, which reached out to the hearts, minds and souls of people, no matter what their conviction. This is what the Auliyas, sufis, faqirs, malangs, dervishes, yogis and all men and women of sprituality did, drawing upon the fertility of the cultures of India, stirring the spirits and soothing the souls of all peoples. I cried from joy, listening to this, realizing that in this day, where there is so much talk and so little understanding, that the messages of centuries ago are being preserved and building spiritual and cultural bonds among all peoples.

Munshi Razziudin's soul must be brimming with joy and peace on beholding his sons at this maqaam. They have covered such a long journey from that cold, austere winter of 1990, when they did their first European tour and struggled to find their place under the sun. Allah in ko aur kamiyabian dey, kyun kay in ki niyyatain paak hain.
