Bujhi Hui Shama Ka Dhuan Hoon-

from the CD entitled Opus

Transliteration:

Bujhi Hui Shama Ka Dhuan Hoon, Aur Apnay Markaz Ko Ja Raha Hoon
Ke Dil Ki Hasrat To Mit Chuki Hai, Ub Apni Hasti Mita Raha Hoon

Teri Hi Soorat K Daikhnay Ko, Butoon Ki Tasveerin La Raha Hoon
Ke Khoobiyaan Sub Ki Jama Ker Ke, Tera Tasawwar Jama Raha Hoon

Kafan Mein Khudh Ko Chupa Dia Hai, Ke Tujh Ko Parday Ki
Ho Na Zehmat
Naqaab Apne Liyeah Bana Ker, Hijaab Tera Utha Raha Hoon

Udhar wo ghar se nikal pare hein, idhar mera dam nikal raha hai
Ilahi kaise hai yeh qayamat, woh aa rahe hein mein ja raha hoon

Muhabbat Insaan Ki Hai Fitrat, Kahaan Hai Imkaan E Tark E Ulfat
Woh Aur Bhi Yaad Aa Rahay Hein, Mein Un Ko Jitna Bhula Raha Hoon

Zubaan Pay Labaik Her Nafas Mein, Jabeen Pay Sajda Hai
Her Qadam Pay
Yoon Ja Raha But-Kaday Ko Natik, Ke Jaisay Kaa'bay
Ko Ja Raha Hoon

Bujhi Hui Shama Ka Dhuan Hoon, Aur Apnay Markaz Ko Ja Raha Hoon
Ke Dil Ki Hasrat To Mit Chuki Hai, Ub Apni Hasti Mita Raha Hoon

English Translation:

I am the smoke of an extinguishd candle, and going towards my grave
My heart doesnt have wishes anymore, now i am destroying my existence.

Only to see your face, I am getting images of idols
So that i can assimilate their splendity, and make a thought
(imagination) of you.

I have hidden myself in a shroud, so that you dont have the trouble
of putting on the veil.
By making a veil for myself, I am lifting your veil.

There they leave the home and here I am dying
God! How is this Qayaamat, they are comig and I am going.

Love is man's nature, where is the possibility of leaving love,
The more I try to forget them, the more I remember them.

'I am here' on the tongue, in every soul, forhead is in prostration
on every step
Naatiq is going to the temple, as if he is going to the Ka'aba
(mosque).

Naatiq = a person who is intelligent or a person who can talk.

Kya Kashish Husn-e-Beypanaah Mein hai - Jigar Muradabadi by Ustad Aziz Ahmed Khan Warsi

Kya kashish husn-e-beypanaah mein hai,
jo qadam hai usi ki raah mein hai

Maikade mein na khaanqaah mein hai,
jo tajalli dil-e-tabaah mein hai

Haaye woh raaz-e-gham ke jo ab tak,
tere dil mein meri nigaah mein hai

Ishq mein kaisi manzil-e-maqsood,
voh bhi ek gard hai jo raah mein hai

Main jahan hun tere khayaal mein hun,
tu jahan hai meri nigaah mein hai

Husn ko bhi kahan naseeb Jigar,
voh jo ek shai meri nigaah mein hai

Kuchh iss ada se aaj vo pehlu nasheen rahe - Jigar Muradabadi

Kuchh is adaa se aaj wo pehlu nasheen rahe-
jab tak hamaare paas rahe, hum nahin rahe

hairaan hun main ke phir bhi tum itne haseen rahe

jaa aur koi zabt ki duniya talaash kar
ae ishq hum to ab tere qaabil nahin rahe

Allah re chashm-e yaar ki maujiz bayaniyaan
har ek ko hai gumaa ke mukhaatib hamin rahe

mujh ko nahin qabool do aalam ki wus'aten
qismat mein koo-e yaar ki do gaz zameen rahe

is ishq ki talaafi-e maafaat dekhna
rone ki hasratein hain jab aansu nahin rahe

Utni hi barhi hasrat jitna hi udhar dekha

Yun dil ke tadhapne ka kuch tao hai sabab aakhir
Yaa dard ne karwat lee, yaa tumne idhar deikha

Maathey pa pasina kyuN aaNkhoN mein nami si kyuN
Kuch Khair tao hai tumne kya haal-e-jigar deikha

Har su dikhai dete hain wo jalvagar mujhe
kya-kya fareb deti hai meri nazar mujhe

Aaya na ras nala-e-dil ka asar mujhe
ab tum mile to kuch nahi apni khabar mujhe

aankhen hain aur kuchh nahi aata nazar mujhe
Karna hai aaj hazrat-e-naseh se samana
mil jaye do ghadi ko tumhari nazar mujhe

Yaksan hai husn-o-ishq ke sarmastiyon ka rang
unki khabar unhein hai na apni khabar mujhe
main dur hun to ruh-e-sukhan mujh se kis liye
tum pas ho to kyon nahi aate nazar mujhe
Dil le ke mera detey ho dag-e-jigar mujhe
ye baat bhulane ki nahi umr bhar mujhe

Malika e Ghazal - Begum Akhtar

Listening to Begum Akhtar's captivating singing of ghazals invoke loving memories of my late parents when I was first exposed to her music in the early 60'. She was Abajan's favorite and Amie, being from Rampur, loved to sing Shakil Baduni poetry in her style at small family gatherings when we were children.

It is our good fortune that Begum saheba was singing during a period when there were significant recordings made of her delightful mehfils and radio performances that are now available on CDs. Here is a collection of love poems from Badaun, Moradabad and Bhopal. Akhtar had at her disposal a treasure trove of good Urdu poetry from her contemporaries of the region. Born in district Faizabad, UP, she was better known as Akhtari Bai Faizabadi prior to her marriage. Her life was dedicated to music and she is still loved and admired by music lovers the world over. As far as Ghazal singing goes, she is still considered the gold standard to this day.

I hope you enjoy these as much as I did.

Hairat-e-ishq nahin - Jigar Muradabadi

Recital: Ustad Bahauddin Qawwal

Jigar Muradabadi
Hairat-e-ishq nahin, shauq junoonposh nahin
Be-hijaban na chale aao mujhe hosh nahin.....

Rind jo mujh ko samajhte hain, unhein hosh nahin
Maikada saaz hoon main maikada bardosh nahin

Kah gai kaan mein aa kar tere daaman ki hawa

Aaj tak hosh nahin, hosh nahin, hosh nahin

Mehw-e-tasbeeh hi to sab hain magar idraaq kahaan
Zindagi khud hi ibaadat hai magar hosh nahin

Mujh ko ye waham hai jaise mera aagosh nahin

Jalwa dikha ke Yaar ne, diwana ker diya - Ahmed Warsi Nasiri Qawwal

"Ustad Mohammed Ahmed Warsi Nasiri Qawwal & Group performed at a ghar mehfil (home concert) in 2008 with a select group of listeners. This kalam (poem) titled "Khud Shamaa Ban Gaye Mujhe Parwaana Kar Diya..." was the gem of the evening. The core kalam is Jigar Moradabadi's but Warsisahib deployed masterful girehs (thematically related poetic insertions) drawing from Amir Khusrau, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Shams Tabrizi, Jalaluddin Rumi and Fani Badayuni to name a few. The rendition is made more charming (in my opinion) by a couple of anecdotes he narrates to heighten the effect of the girehs. Warsisahib's wit is showcased when he notices a few people leaving the mehfil and turns that event into a sher (couplet) in the same meter as the one he was singing before it and following it. He notices a particularly enchanted elderly connoisseur in the back towards the end and asks me to crouch down from the video recorder to establish visual contact with him. All in all, this is among my favourite qawwali tracks of all time and I hope you all enjoy it!" ~ Irfan Zuberi

Jalwa dikha ke Yaar ne, diwana ker diya
khud shama ban gaye, mujhey parvana ker diya

Saaqi ki chashm-e-mast nein, mastana ker diya
aisi pilayi mujh ko ke, diwana ker diya

Kya mangtey ho mujh se, mere paas kuchh nahin
ik dil tha woh bhi aap ko, nazrana ker diya

Jaon mein kahan mein chhor ke, murshed tumhara ghar
tum ne hamarey ghar ko Khudakhana ker diya

Ye husn, ye nikhar, ye aankhon ki mastiyan
jiss pe nigah pard gayee, diwana ker diya

Allah, un ka aur bhi, rutba karein buland
lakhon gada ko aap ne shahana ker diya
