Neeki Lagat Mohey Apne Piya Ki - Farid Ayaz Qawwal

Lost in thought, this is the pensive and wistful mood of Farid Ayaz that I love most.

Preamble: Laagi Laagi sab kahein, laagi buri bala
Laagi to tab jaaniyo, jab aar paar hoee jaae ~ Kabir

----

Poet: Turab Hyderabadi

Neeki lagat mohe apnay piya ki
(Moray piya ki) Aankh raseeli jaado bhari

Nazar nay nazar mulaqat kar li (borrowed verse)
Rahay donon khamosh aur baat kat li

Chaen parat naahi mukh daikay bina
Daikh najar bhar jaat mari ray

Kaahay Turab darre kaahu say
Preet karee, ka mein chori karee ray?!

In Search of the Divine - Hazrat Zaheen Shah Taji

English Translation:

Calling out Maula Maula! Maula still escapes us.
We only play with words, meaning still escapes us.

Who understands the word Water as Water,is a fool,
He will keep chanting Water Water and will die of thirst.

By chanting Fire Fire, the lips don't feel the heat,
Place one ember on the lips, then see how they burn.

He who contents himself with names, end up loosing the Named.
The fools who puts in no effort amuse themselves with Name

-------

Jo pani ke naam ko pani jaane, naadaani hai

Ism pe Qaane hone waala aur musamma khone waala

About a year ago the recital at the bottom was added to this blog, however today Sabeen Mahmud has added this new and beautiful rendition which is in quite a different mood and contains lovely Urdu verses not heard in earlier performances. I have therefore added it to this old posting. A sure treat for Urdu lovers.

Har Lehza Bashakal-aan Boot-e-ayaar Bar amad, dil Burd-o-nihan Shud
Har Dam ba Libas-e-Digar-aan Yaar Bar amad, Geh Peer-o-Jawan Shud

--

--------

The preamble in Urdu consists of verses that introduce the main poem of Mevlana Rumi. It helps set the tone and mood of the listener and at 3.13 minutes the main kalam begins. Farid Ayaz Qawwal has successfully demonstrated what is common in the sufiana words of various saints and poets with regards to similar ideas about revelation and mother earth. The thoughts about Mitti/Earth/Gil (Rumi *)/Maati (Kabir**) have all been beautifully expressed by Rumi, Kabir, Bulleh Shah, Baba Farid to mention a few. I leave the rest for you to enjoy and absorb.

*Rumi: Khud Kuza-o, Khud Kuzagar-o, Khud Gil-e-Kuza, Khud Rind-e-sobookash

**Kabir: Maati kahe kumbhar ko. Tu kya roondhe mohe. Ek din aisaa aayega. Mai roondhoo gi tohe

Har Lehza Bashakal-aan Boot-e-ayaar Bar amad, dil Burd-o-nihan Shud
Har Dam ba Libas-e-Digar-aan Yaar Bar amad, Geh Peer-o-Jawan Shud

Khud Kuza-o, Khud Kuzagar-o, Khud Gil-e-Kuza, Khud Rind-e-sobookash
Khud Barsar-e aan Kuza Khareedar Bar amad, Bishkast Rawan Shud

Trans:

He is the vessel, he is its maker, and he is the clay used to make it,
He is the reveler quaffing drinking from it...
He too is the one who buys it, and breaks it, having drunk from it...

The creator and the creations are fully aligned. Symbolism and its parallels become second nature of the mystic artist who reads into the inner meaning of divine secrets creating an art that liberates the human soul. The art of the mystics always has the art of life. It has had the same echo through the ages, in different parts of the world.

Kabir in Pakistan - Had Anhad

Kabir has been sung with such abandon here. The visual experience is almost as intense as the poetic one. The essence of Kabir's words comes through beautifully in the recital by Farid Ayaz Qawwal.

The video is part of a larger project of research on the 15th century mystic poet Kabir. The compilation of clips is from the film "Had Anhad" produced by Shabnam Virmani of The Kabir Project, Bangalore.

@ 7.34 he sounds exactly like his father and ustad Munshi Raziuddin. Made me smile as I observed that. During the film at one point he said something to the affect that "mera Kabir to ye hein" pointing towards his fathers picture on their living room wall. ustaad ka ehteraam aur muhabbat.

Saacha Saheb Ek Tu - Poem of Kabir by Shafi Faqir

Shafi Faqir is a Manghaniar from Sindh, Pakistan and sings in a style that is highly classical yet distinctly folk, bringing home the voice of Kabir along with other Sufi poets in Sindhi, Punjabi, Urdu, Siraiki and other languages.

"I was born on the border itself, in Gadroh city. At the time of Partition, the city came to Pakistan and its railway went to India. I'm from the Manghaniar community, many of whom are settled in Rajasthan. Many of my relatives are in Jodhpur, Bikaner, Jaisalmer... my grandmother's family is all in India."

Saacha Saheb Ek Tu - Translation:

Guru in the heavens, seek in my heart.
Awareness meets the World they're never apart.

The True Lord is One - You (Saacha Saheb Ek Tu).
Your Servant is in Love.

Raga is the form of Ram, Ram is the Raga.
Listen carefully, for he cannot be seen!

Day and night I cry the Name
Not for a moment forgotten
Keeping every breath in Him
You - my true Lord!

Without sound, no devotion is possible
Without a guru, no wisdom
Without struggle, no kingdom can be yours
Without good fortune no Beloved.

Rid me of my slumber,
Lord, awake me to You.
Devoted in my faith,
I witness You alone

However I describe you,
you are deep, and deeper still.
In my awareness dwells your form,
Kabir has lost his mind!

Thunderclaps beguile the peacock
A mare won't hid from lifted reins
Coquettes can't hide their flirty walk
Eyes divulge the spare of love
A wall of stars can't veil the moon
Gathering clouds won't blot the sun
A Rajput won't hide on the battlefield
Generous could won't hide from beggars
The jogi appears in many a guise
But rubbing ashes won't hide his deeds!
