Of the many renditions of the Qaul the ones that appeal most are those that start slowly and help build a mood. Ones that gently immerse the listener in the spirit of the music. This version by Ustad Bakshi Javed Salamat certainly happens to be amongst those. Noteworthy also are the many voices in the party that are steeped in classical singing as well able to sing so well together as a group.

Their percussion players (table & dhol) play an important role in creating a beautiful atmosphere and also for a change the well rounded sound of the harmonium here is quite pleasant. Enjoy!

'Ismail Azad Qawwal, a very celebrated qawwal of the era 1940-50s, was from India and sung many renowned qawwaliz a huge proportion of which were the masterpieces written by Anwar Masroor. He was famous for singing qawwaliz with lyrics having sheer meanings and lessons in them. His qawwaliz were copied in India as well as in Pakistan subsequently. Many qawwals seemed to have inspired by his beguiling compositions and the way he delivered the verses.

'The dominant feature of his masterpieces was the simplicity and the meaningfulness of the kalam and the catchy compositions that magnetized the attention of the listeners and generated a considerable Ismaili fanclub. Unlike a traditional qawwal, he never focused on the 'raag' yet he possessed a melodious, sharp and easily distinguishable voice. Since he made his mark far before the 3 gigantic legends namely Aziz Mian, Sabri Borthers and Nusrat, they viewed him as one of the trendsetters in the qawwali world. Naat, Manqabat and Shan-e-Auliya (Grandeur of Saints) were the major topics of his qawwaliz though he sung for the films as well including numbers like "Hamain To Loot Liya", etc. His famous numbers were "Paaray Paaray Pe Likha Hai Kamli Walay Ka Naam", "Mere Peer Hain Jilani", "Takhti", "Haider Ki Talwar", "Bade Peer Benazir", "Hamain To Loot Liya" and many more.'

Mun Kunto Moala - Ustad Raza Ali Khan

In praise of Hazrat Ali, this manqabat is is sung with the accompaniment of modern instruments and will surely appeal to the young at heart.

Ustad Raza Ali Khan is the grandson of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, of the Kasur Patiala Gharana, and is otherwise mostly a classical and semi-classical singer.
He is also an accomplished music director and composer.

Badar was born in 1962 in a noted family of qawwals in Pak Pattan. His father Miandad and grandfather Din Muhammad were reputed qawwals. He was a cousin of the late maestro Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

Born in 1962, Badar started his qawwali career in 1975, and by the mid 80s he had earned fame.

kaha jaata hai ke punjab ki qawwali mein taali bohat achhee bajti hai aur tabla bhi zordaar hota hai. Here is an example where the pace of the singing is relatively slow and pensive, yet the qawwal party is united beautifully in clapping and the tablanawaz also performs with gusto as Badar Ali Khan leads them.

This is part of a wonderful rare collection of 5 CDs entitled
JOURNEY TO SUFISM that was made by Spectrum as tribute to
Ustad Suleman Khansaheb on his 25th anniversary. It is an
absolute must for classical qawwali lovers. Perhaps Najmuddin
may have copies to sell. It is a collection of Ustad Bhauddin's work
from 1978 to 2001.

Most of the kalams are a clear and crisp audio quality but a few
are iffy recordings. I found this set in a small store in Islamabad
five years back collecting dust at their top shelf .

ps. suleman khansaheb was the father of manzur niazi, bahauddin and munshi raziuddin.... the grandfather of present day qawwals abdullah manzoor niazi, najmuddin saifuddin and farid and abu muhammad.

ماننا ایمان کا حصہ ہے اور نہ ماننے سے ایمان نہیں رہتا)۔

Wiladat Hazrat Ali Murtaza

13th of Rajab is being remembered and celebrated as the (1347th) birthday of Hazrat Ali Murtaza -- Sahabi-e-Rasul, Imam, Khalifa-e-Rashidoon, scholar, statesman, and warrior. His numerous virtues and achievements, which need no introduction here, are beautifully captured in the following Man Kunto Maula rendition by Munshi Raziuddin, a fantastic composition which brings together Urdu and Persian couplets from various poets and saints.
