The first time that I heard Shanti Hiranand sing she swept me off my feet. The warmth of her voice, the subtle emphasis of expressions, the attention to impeccable pronunciation of the beautiful Urdu poetry she sings, and finally the unhurried andaaz, all reached out and touched me. She makes me proud to simply know that there are the likes of her out there today paying attention to such details and keeping the art alive and well. I hope and wish that she has similar disciples whom she is training to become future Shanti Hiranands and Begum Akhtars with their very own unique twist. Enjoy!

The first time that I heard Shanti Hiranand sing she swept me off my feet. The warmth of her voice, the subtle emphasis of expressions, the attention to impeccable pronunciation of the beautiful Urdu poetry she sings, and finally the unhurried andaaz, all reached out and touched me. She makes me proud to simply know that there are the likes of her out there today paying attention to such details and keeping the art alive and well. Malika e Ghazal - Begum Akhtar
Listening to Begum Akhtar's captivating singing of ghazals invoke loving memories of my late parents when I was first exposed to her music in the early 60'. She was Abajan's favorite and Amie, being from Rampur, loved to sing Shakil Baduni poetry in her style at small family gatherings when we were children.
It is our good fortune that Begum saheba was singing during a period when there were significant recordings made of her delightful mehfils and radio performances that are now available on CDs. Here is a collection of love poems from Badaun, Moradabad and Bhopal. Akhtar had at her disposal a treasure trove of good Urdu poetry from her contemporaries of the region. Born in district Faizabad, UP, she was better known as Akhtari Bai Faizabadi prior to her marriage. Her life was dedicated to music and she is still loved and admired by music lovers the world over. As far as Ghazal singing goes, she is still considered the gold standard to this day.
I hope you enjoy these as much as I did.

Jo Mein Jaanati Bichharat Hein Sanyaan by Farid Ayaz
Farid Ayaz manages to add depth and meaning with several related verses in
his preamble to Shakeel Badayuni's ghazal
"Jo Mein Jaanati Bichharat Hein Sanyaan".
Note the following wonderful verses:
Ayena ban kar maqabil us ke jab aata hun mein
Apni soorat daikhta hun aur itrata hun mein
Aye teer-e ghamat raa del-e ushaaq neshaana
(Jamm'ai) Khalq-ai ba tu mashghool o tu ghaayeb ze meyaana
